🌊 Tupperware Proves Breakable

Plus: Why the Fed cutting interest rates matters...

On this day in abduction history…

Today is the 63rd anniversary of the alleged Barney and Betty Hill abduction, which was really the US’ first widely-publicized alien abduction story. They were driving home in New Hampshire when they encountered a mysterious light in the sky. The aliens then abducted and inspected them, as they later recounted under hypnosis.

So when your friend asks you what’s the worst that could happen from a 2 AM trip to Taco Bell, now you have your answer.

Walkie-Talkie Blasts

Hezbollah walkie-talkies blew up across Lebanon

  • Hundreds of Hezbollah pagers exploded in Lebanon on Tuesday, killing nine and wounding 2,800. Hezbollah accused Israel of planting explosives in the shipment, which had been recently imported

  • On Wednesday, thousands of Hezbollah’s two-way radios blew up. The devices were intended for use in a war, and many were in storage. Assuming Israel knew that, the attack might have been intended as a threat or to damage Hezbollah’s ability to communicate in a war

  • At least 14 people were killed and 450 injured. Two Axios sources said Israel blew up the radios because they thought Hezbollah would discover the plot after the pager attack

Dig Deeper

  • The US, which denied having any knowledge of the attack, has been pressuring Israel not to attack Hezbollah

  • On Wednesday, Israel’s defense minister said, “The ‘center of gravity’ is moving north, meaning that we are allocating forces, resources, and energy for the northern arena…I believe that we are at the start of a new phase in the war, and we must adapt”

  • Meanwhile, PM Netanyahu said in a video statement, “I’ve already said [that] we will return the residents of the north securely to their homes. And this is, precisely, what we will do”

Fed Slashes Rates

The Federal Reserve (Fed) cut interest rates

  • The Fed lowers rates – making money “cheaper” to borrow – to increase the money supply to spur hiring and spending. If rates are too low, though, the excess cash in the economy can lead to inflation

  • Through this balancing act, the Fed aims to maximize employment while keeping inflation at 2%. Today’s cut is the first since 2020. This past year, rates have been at their highest level since 2000

  • The Fed attributed its decision to slowing inflation and a weakening jobs market, in which hiring has slowed significantly this year

Dig Deeper

  • The Fed cut rates by $0.50 after deliberating between that and a less aggressive $0.25 cut

  • Inflation – still above the Fed’s 2% target – fell to 2.5% in August. Unemployment, meanwhile, has jumped to 4.2% – up from 3.7% in January

  • Markets were relatively unreactive as investors had largely expected the cut. The S&P 500 finished the day down 0.3%

Tupperware Bankruptcy

Tupperware filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday

  • Founded in 1946 by chemist Earl Tupper, the brand soared in popularity in the 1950s as women hosted “Tupperware parties” to sell food shortage containers. Despite shifting to direct-to-consumer sales and partnering with Target, rising competition and fading nostalgia led to declining sales

  • Tupperware restructured its debt in August 2023. However, the turnaround failed: By June, the company announced the closure of its only US facility and raised bankruptcy concerns due to liquidity issues

  • In its bankruptcy filing, Tupperware listed $500M to $1B in assets and $1B to $10B in liabilities. The company plans to seek court approval to continue operations while exploring a sale

Dig Deeper

  • Tupperware lost ground to competitors offering cheaper and more eco-friendly containers

  • It had struggled for years with rising labor, freight, and raw material costs after the pandemic, adding pressure. The company also experienced wild stock fluctuations in 2022 amid “meme stock” rallies

Russia: Sex or Perish

Russian officials are pushing Russians to have more sex

  • Russia faces a demographic crisis: Between a low birth rate – 1.5, lower than the 2.1 needed to maintain the population – losses in war, and emigration, its already-shrinking population has been shrinking faster since 2022

  • Amid these challenges, Putin recently said that “the fate of Russia” depends on its birth rate

  • Various politicians and officials have since laid out plans to boost the birth rate, including the health minister, who suggested employees have sex on their breaks and a parliamentarian, who said bosses should monitor how many kids their staff is having

Dig Deeper

  • Speaking at an economic conference, a Russian politician and deputy chair of the Russian Parliament’s Committee on Family Affairs said employers should monitor their employees’ birth rates

  • “Every employer…should look: What is your birth rate? In your team? Do you have one more child this year from each person who can give birth or not?”

🧐 Yesterday’s question: Who’s someone in media today who does a good job of listening to and platforming different viewpoints?

Oddly enough, I would probably say Bill Maher. He calls himself a democrat, but points out how much further left the party has gone and brings on people to explain their viewpoints without talking over them. I would never have guessed this ten years ago, but he seems to be honest about his own beliefs, and curious enough to find out the WHY behind the other side.

ROCA WRAP

An All-Time Breach

When Hezbollah pagers began exploding across Lebanon on Tuesday, the question arose: Who made them?

Hezbollah had recently imported the affected pager shipment to Lebanon. Images of the pagers suggested Gold Apollo – a Taiwanese company – had made them. But, Taiwanese trade ministry data shows Gold Apollo has exported 261,000 pagers since 2022, and none went to Lebanon.

On Wednesday, Gold Apollo said that it hired a Hungarian manufacturer to make the pagers that are exported to Lebanon. That manufacturer – BAC Consulting – is registered to an address in Budapest. The company’s website says it provides everything from cybersecurity and environmental consulting to jewelry and telecoms-related services.

But there was no business present at the Budapest address, and no one had any familiarity with the company. Calls to its registered number went unanswered.

Later Wednesday, Hungary’s government said BAC Consulting has no manufacturing or operations in Hungary. The pagers that exploded in Lebanon, it said, were never in Hungary.

Analysts have suggested that whoever was behind the attack – most likely Israel –could have either hacked the devices or, more likely, inserted explosives during manufacturing. Another possibility is that they intercepted a shipment, inserted explosives, and shipped it.

The attack came less than a year after Hezbollah’s leader told members to stop using cell phones because they could be traced or hacked by Israel, and Hezbollah leaders have called the breach the biggest in the group’s history.

Beyond the security implications, thousands of members were maimed by the explosions: The pagers were in people’s pockets, hands, or in front of their eyes, causing serious injury to those body parts. Many members had kept their Hezbollah affiliations private, and the blasts “outed” them in front of unknowing relatives or colleagues.

The group immediately began looking for collaborators who could have leaked information that enabled the attack.

Then, one day later, hundreds of walkie-talkies exploded, deepening the mystery.

Final Thoughts

It was fascinating to read your answers to yesterday’s question of the day. One of the popular picks was Joe Rogan, who ahem happens to read Roca. He’s also top of mind given the Barney and Betty Hill abduction intro. Can you imagine if that happened today? The Joe Rogan interview would do silly numbers.
