Walkie-Talkie Blasts
Hezbollah walkie-talkies blew up across Lebanon
Hundreds of Hezbollah pagers exploded in Lebanon on Tuesday, killing nine and wounding 2,800. Hezbollah accused Israel of planting explosives in the shipment, which had been recently imported
On Wednesday, thousands of Hezbollahâs two-way radios blew up. The devices were intended for use in a war, and many were in storage. Assuming Israel knew that, the attack might have been intended as a threat or to damage Hezbollahâs ability to communicate in a war
At least 14 people were killed and 450 injured. Two Axios sources said Israel blew up the radios because they thought Hezbollah would discover the plot after the pager attack

Fed Slashes Rates
The Federal Reserve (Fed) cut interest rates
The Fed lowers rates â making money âcheaperâ to borrow â to increase the money supply to spur hiring and spending. If rates are too low, though, the excess cash in the economy can lead to inflation
Through this balancing act, the Fed aims to maximize employment while keeping inflation at 2%. Todayâs cut is the first since 2020. This past year, rates have been at their highest level since 2000
The Fed attributed its decision to slowing inflation and a weakening jobs market, in which hiring has slowed significantly this year

The Fed cut rates by $0.50 after deliberating between that and a less aggressive $0.25 cut
Inflation â still above the Fedâs 2% target â fell to 2.5% in August. Unemployment, meanwhile, has jumped to 4.2% â up from 3.7% in January
Markets were relatively unreactive as investors had largely expected the cut. The S&P 500 finished the day down 0.3%

Tupperware Bankruptcy
Tupperware filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday
Founded in 1946 by chemist Earl Tupper, the brand soared in popularity in the 1950s as women hosted âTupperware partiesâ to sell food shortage containers. Despite shifting to direct-to-consumer sales and partnering with Target, rising competition and fading nostalgia led to declining sales
Tupperware restructured its debt in August 2023. However, the turnaround failed: By June, the company announced the closure of its only US facility and raised bankruptcy concerns due to liquidity issues
In its bankruptcy filing, Tupperware listed $500M to $1B in assets and $1B to $10B in liabilities. The company plans to seek court approval to continue operations while exploring a sale

Russia: Sex or Perish
Russian officials are pushing Russians to have more sex
Russia faces a demographic crisis: Between a low birth rate â 1.5, lower than the 2.1 needed to maintain the population â losses in war, and emigration, its already-shrinking population has been shrinking faster since 2022
Amid these challenges, Putin recently said that âthe fate of Russiaâ depends on its birth rate
Various politicians and officials have since laid out plans to boost the birth rate, including the health minister, who suggested employees have sex on their breaks and a parliamentarian, who said bosses should monitor how many kids their staff is having

đ§ Yesterdayâs question: Whoâs someone in media today who does a good job of listening to and platforming different viewpoints?
Oddly enough, I would probably say Bill Maher. He calls himself a democrat, but points out how much further left the party has gone and brings on people to explain their viewpoints without talking over them. I would never have guessed this ten years ago, but he seems to be honest about his own beliefs, and curious enough to find out the WHY behind the other side.

An All-Time Breach
When Hezbollah pagers began exploding across Lebanon on Tuesday, the question arose: Who made them?
Hezbollah had recently imported the affected pager shipment to Lebanon. Images of the pagers suggested Gold Apollo â a Taiwanese company â had made them. But, Taiwanese trade ministry data shows Gold Apollo has exported 261,000 pagers since 2022, and none went to Lebanon.
On Wednesday, Gold Apollo said that it hired a Hungarian manufacturer to make the pagers that are exported to Lebanon. That manufacturer â BAC Consulting â is registered to an address in Budapest. The companyâs website says it provides everything from cybersecurity and environmental consulting to jewelry and telecoms-related services.
But there was no business present at the Budapest address, and no one had any familiarity with the company. Calls to its registered number went unanswered.
Later Wednesday, Hungaryâs government said BAC Consulting has no manufacturing or operations in Hungary. The pagers that exploded in Lebanon, it said, were never in Hungary.
Analysts have suggested that whoever was behind the attack â most likely Israel âcould have either hacked the devices or, more likely, inserted explosives during manufacturing. Another possibility is that they intercepted a shipment, inserted explosives, and shipped it.
The attack came less than a year after Hezbollahâs leader told members to stop using cell phones because they could be traced or hacked by Israel, and Hezbollah leaders have called the breach the biggest in the groupâs history.
Beyond the security implications, thousands of members were maimed by the explosions: The pagers were in peopleâs pockets, hands, or in front of their eyes, causing serious injury to those body parts. Many members had kept their Hezbollah affiliations private, and the blasts âoutedâ them in front of unknowing relatives or colleagues.
The group immediately began looking for collaborators who could have leaked information that enabled the attack.
Then, one day later, hundreds of walkie-talkies exploded, deepening the mystery.
