šŸŒŠ The DOGE Days Aren't Over

Plus: Matt Gaetz bows out, New York ends snow days, & more trivia!

Shoutout to another American hero.

Today is the birthday of a man who never got any respect: Rodney Dangerfield. The legendary comic would've turned 103 today if his Doctor Vinnie Boombotz might've given him better advice. Rodney first became a hit in his 50s, proving that it's never too late to chase a dream. Itā€™s also Friday, so let's dance!

DOGEā€™s Plan

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy outlined their goal to dramatically reduce the size of the federal government

  • In a WSJ op-ed, the duo wrote that they would focus on two SCOTUS rulings that limited the power of federal agencies to issue rules and regulations. Theyā€™ll use these to create a list of rules that Trump can immediately end or pause, then fire the employees who are no longer needed. They will also require all federal employees to return to in-person work. Ramaswamy has predicted that will cause 25% of those impacted to resign

  • The plans will likely encounter fierce resistance from government workers

Dig Deeper

  • The duo summarized their philosophy like this: ā€œOur nation was founded on the basic idea that the people we elect run the government. That isn't how America functions today. Most legal edicts aren't laws enacted by Congress but ā€˜rules and regulationsā€™ promulgated by unelected bureaucrats ā€” tens of thousands of them each year"

  • While various rules prevent the firing of government employees, the pair asserted that these rules were intended to protect employees from political retaliation and that layoffs to reduce the size of the workforce are therefore allowable

US-Russia Escalation

Russia launched a new ballistic missile at Ukraine as tensions between it and the West increase

  • In the last week, the US and UK have permitted Ukraine to fire their long-distance missiles at Russian territory, and the US has begun transferring anti-personnel mines to Ukraine

  • Early Thursday Ukraine time, Russia launched ballistic missiles at Ukraine. While Ukraine initially claimed they were inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), Western governments and Russia both said they were intermediate-range missiles

  • Ballistic missiles are more powerful, faster, and harder to shoot down than traditional missiles

  • Analysts said the launch served no practical purpose and that the move was a threat by President Putin: The missiles could reach Western Europe and deliver nuclear warheads

Dig Deeper

  • In announcing the strikes, Putin said, ā€œFurther actions will be considered and decided based on what we see from themā€

  • The Biden administration, meanwhile, said, ā€œEscalation at every turn, at every step, is coming from Russiaā€

Hegseth Update

A leaked police report has reportedly blindsided the Trump campaign and dented Pete Hegsethā€™s odds of confirmation as defense secretary

  • The report details a sexual assault allegation against Hegseth. It followed an investigation sparked by a woman who met Hegseth at a Republican conference and claimed to have been drugged, brought back to Hegsethā€™s hotel room, and blocked from leaving. Hegseth has said they had a consensual ā€œencounterā€

  • The police investigation did not end in any charges and Hegseth has said, ā€œThe matter was fully investigated and I was completely cleared.ā€ Still, the Trump campaign has reportedly been ā€œblindsidedā€ by the reportā€™s existence

Dig Deeper

  • Hegseth reportedly received a report with these details in 2021 but kept it private

  • Trumpā€™s spokesperson has defended Hegseth, yet per the Wall Street Journal, Trump was ā€œblindsidedā€ by the details. The source told the paper that if ā€œthe press coverage continues to be bad, particularly on TV, then I think there is a real chance that [Hegseth] loses Trumpā€™s confidenceā€

Matt Gaetz Bows Out

A day after a new report that he paid two women $10k for sex, Trumpā€™s attorney general pick Matt Gaetz announced heā€™s withdrawing his nomination. Trump proceeded to nominate Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi

  • Per documents first obtained by ABC News, Matt Gaetz made 27 PayPal and Venmo payments to two women between July 2017 and January 2019 for sex

  • The payments totaled over $10k. Both of the women were reportedly over 18 at the time

  • After getting nominated to be attorney general, Gaetz resigned his seat for the 118th Congress. It is now debated whether he can now return to his seat for the 119th Congress in January 2025

  • Gaetzā€™s replacement is a much more conventional pick: Bondi is an experienced prosecutor who has been a vocal supporter of Trump

Dig Deeper

  • ā€œWhile the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,ā€ Gaetz wrote

  • The House Ethics Committee has debated releasing its findings from its investigation but has thus far refused to do so. The Committee got ahold of the FBI documents that detailed Gaetzā€™s alleged pay-for-sex spending patterns

COMMUNITY

šŸ§ Todayā€™s question: Whoā€™s someone who improves your town/neighborhood?

My dad! Heā€™s the mayor of our small city in Florida, and heā€™s been really influential in the community through the hurricanes, covid, and lots of other challenges. Heā€™s really helped push for a lot of growth and revitalization of the city, and Iā€™m super proud of all the work heā€™s done.

Delaney from Temple Terrace, FL

How can you pick just one person that makes your town better? Itā€™s a group effort, right?

Seeing weā€™re approaching the end of 2024 and the holiday shopping season is starting to pick up, Iā€™d like to give a shout out to all those employees that keep a smile on their face amongst the craziness. Whether you work in a restaurant, Walmart, a small business or anything else, thanks for always making my day a little brighter and a bit more manageable. šŸ˜Š

Jillian from Wisconsin

The laundry lady Ms. Lily in my NYC neighborhood is the sweetest and most amazing woman. Every single day she brings joy and energy to peopleā€™s lives. Iā€™ve been going to her for years now, and she is never not upbeat. While most young people live their daily lives like Zombies in my neighborhood, everyone takes out their earphones and puts on a smile (yes, not a high bar but thatā€™s where we are) when they enter the laundry neighborhood. And even though she lives simply, people must notice that she is happier than the people living above her in penthouses.

Final Thoughts

Weā€™re now back in New York after another eye-opening roadtrip. We went to Gary, IN, East Cleveland, OH, Akron, OH, Youngstown, OH, and a handful of small towns along the Ohio River. We are blown away by the decency of so many in these communities. We want to shed more of a light on those everyday heroes on future roadtrips. They donā€™t get nearly enough attention. Hope you have a great weekend and thank you to all of our Ohio readers who sent us recs!
